SIGNAGE SYSTEM DESIGN

The Project:

This university project was aimed towards creating a streamlined wayfinding system concept that aligns with the current identity and aesthetics of the Pier, and focusing on clarity and ease of understanding for the audience. This includes redesigning the existing map as well as signage around the location. The project highlights the Pier’s event spaces, music and theaters, rides and attractions, as well as restaurants.

My Approach:

Due to the remote nature of this project, conducted across different countries, my approach primarily centered on comprehensive secondary research. I structured my methodology to begin with a thorough examination of the location's historical context through site analysis. Additionally, I charted the distribution of amenities available at the Pier to gain insight into its spatial organization. This foundational work informed the development of strategic wayfinding objectives, tailored to optimize the navigation experience for both tourists and local residents during their visits to the area.

My Thought Process.

Developing a conceptual wayfinding system via remote research presented a significant challenge, which served as a catalyst for me to demonstrate my proficiency and expertise across diverse platforms.

I engaged in ideation sessions to generate multiple moodboards for signage design, conducted comprehensive material research through interactions with signage industry professionals, and acquired insights into the manufacturing processes. Factors such as geographical locations, weather conditions, color psychology, and the range of wayfinding products were carefully integrated into my approach.

This comprehensive exploration broadened my understanding, enabling the delivery of both aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective concepts as the ultimate output.

PHASE 01

AREA DISTRIBUTION

In order to enhance the navigational experience within the Pier, I implemented the strategy of segmenting the site into distinct zones.

Each zone is designated with a specific color scheme, which is consistently reflected in the signage placed within its boundaries.

IDEATION

Following the comprehensive gathering of secondary data encompassing area demographics, Pier attractions, target audience personas, and analysis of current signage within the vicinity, I transitioned to the conceptualization phase, translating my insights into preliminary sketches for the envisioned signage systems.

THE DESIGNS

Five distinct signage designs were crafted to symbolize designated zones throughout Navy Pier, strategically aligned with its array of attractions.

Leveraging a color-coded system in alignment with the brand identity facilitates seamless navigation for tourists, enhancing their experience as they explore the diverse locales within the Pier.

The Pier provides various cruise rides along its dock, yet it falls short in providing ample seating and waiting facilities for its visitors. This deficiency in accommodations detracts from the overall experience, leaving guests without comfortable places to rest and wait before embarking on their cruise adventures.

Cruise stands will be placed at each dock of for their respective cruises and boats. The modern, redesigned posters on either sides of the stands will allow tourist to easily locate the spots for the different cruise lines and enjoy the Chicago skyline view while waiting for their rides.

The signage manual curated for the wayfinding system concept outlines the design, placement, and usage specifications for signage within Navy Pier, ensuring consistency and effectiveness in visual communication.

This includes information on materials, visual language, as well as the importance of this solution for the site.
